The Hawks concluded their 2nd annual Tip-Off Classic, falling to Nat’l Christian. This was the Hawks most intense game however, as Hayfield fell behind by 20 points, only to rally down the stretch, closing to as close as 7, with under 3 minutes to play. As the Hawks began to apply full court man to man defense, they also began to get more aggressive, which led to easier baskets against the tough interior defense of Nat’l Christian. In the end, although the deficit was too great, the Hawks saw some promise from their young bench, which should lead to victories, come district play.
Hayfield was led by junior swing forward; Amir Atkins (26 pts, 8 rebs, 2 assts), who made tough shots repeatedly. The Hawks intensity was initiated by junior Tyler Thornton, the Hawks starting point guard, who ball hawked constantly, leading to 4 steals and 4 assists. The late run was continued when junior Alontae Kyle (6 pts, 3 steals) entered the game in the 4th quarter, quickly accumulating his steals, and drilling a much needed 3 pointer.
The Hawks will return to the Hawks Nest next Friday (December 12), as they continue their non-conference play vs. West Springfield HS.
