Talons stronger than stingers, as Hayfield defeats Herndon by 11

Hayfield Secondary School extended their winning streak to 3 games, with an 11 point victory over their new rival, the Fighting Hornets of Herndon HS. The Hawks, though plagued by early foul trouble, and playing short handed with two seniors recovering from injury, led for most of the game. Hayfield used two distinct defenses, both of which hindered the Hornets comebacks. In the end, the Hornets were unable to sustain their last comeback, as two starters fouled out, and their main go to player, was closely defended by a host of Hawks. After starting out the season 0-3, the Hawks have organized their nest, and have leveled at .500 (3-3).

Defense and rebounding set the tone tonight, as the Hawks limited the quick stinging Hornets to 61 points, and the Hawks grabbed 41 rebounds. Senior F Chris Johnson (10pts, 12rebs, 2assts) led the way, snagging a cool dozen of those boards, including 4 offensive. Hayfield also received 13 pts and 15 rebs from their Center combo of Richmond Williams (8pts, 11rebs) and back-up Dalon Thomas (5pts, 4rebs, 1blk). The Hawks received key contributions from reserve PG Phil Guydon (4pts, 1reb), Kendrick Mack (2pts, 2rebs), and Alontae Kyle (2pts, 1reb, 1asst), who played at point, SG, and SF during the game. Hayfield also shot well from beyond the arc, hitting on 5 of 11 three point field goals, including two each from Amir Atkins (27pts, 7rebs) and Tyler Seelman (10pts, 2assts, 1 blk). Tyler Thornton (4pts, 6assts, 4stls) deftly distributed most of his passes, tallying a half dozen helpers, two of which led to threes.
