HAWKS TOUGH ONE OUT VS. GENERALS, WIN 4TH STRAIGHT GAME
The Hawks of Hayfield Secondary defeated the Washington & Lee Generals by 7 points tonight, coming back from a dismal first half of shooting, as Hayfield missed several easy baskets, and struggled to 18 first half points. It was to be a tale of two halves though, as the Hawks soared in the third quarter, going on a 18-5 run in the first 5 minutes, and finishing with 27 in the quarter, and the lead (45-39). The fourth was much like the third, with Hawks adding 23 points, to come within 2 points of 70, their average in the last 4 games.
The Hawks were led by senior SG Tyler Seelman, who bounced back from a poor shooting first half, hitting 4 of his 5 three pointers in the 2nd stanza, on route to a game high 23 pts. Hayfield’s star forward, Amir Atkins (17pts, 7rebs,1stl) also led the comeback, scoring 13 of his 17 from the line (13-16). Sophomore PG Daquan Poindexter (4assts, 1stl, 1reb) who received his first career varsity start, coupled with junior PG Tyler Thornton (5pts, 4assts, 3rebs, 2 stls) led the Hawks to 13 assists overall . Senior F Chris Johnson (10pts, 7rebs, 2stls) continued his inspired play, scoring in double figures for the 4th time this season, and sophomore F/C Montez Wilson (8pts, 4rebs, 3blks) came of the bench, and played outstanding defense vs. W&L’s big man (Jonah Sens), limiting him to 2 of his team high 20 points in that time.
The Hawks victory puts them above .500 for the first time since January 2011. This victory came on Coach Poindexter’s birthday, truly a great present. The Hawks return to action in 2 two days, again taking the floor this Thursday (12/20/12), vs. Jeb Stuart HS.
