IN BATTLE OF THE BIRDS, HAWKS KEEP SOARING!

The Hayfield Secondary Boys Varsity matched their 2011-2012 win total tonight, defeating arch rival Edison HS 70-60. In the first season under Coach Poindexter’s watch, the Hawks are soaring, riding on the wings of a ten game winning streak. The Hawks, who are operating this season without a true big man, have succeeded in each of the last ten games, by coupling gritty defense, with opportunistic shooting. On a night, when the Hawks, who on average visit the FT line 20-22 times, only made 8-13, it was the deep outside shots that bailed out Hayfield. The Hawks hit a season high 10 - 23 (43%) from downtown, and 26 - 48 (54%) overall from the field. Hayfield, who never trailed tonight, (although it was tied on a few occasions), withstood a furious offensive push throughout the game. Edison employs a up tempo attack, fueled upon guard penetration down the key. They also have excellent three point shooters, who were kept in check tonight, only connecting on 3-17 (17%) from beyond the arc. The Hawks also defended their basket well, limiting their opponent to a season low 8 offensive rebounds.

The Hawks received balanced scoring tonight, with three varsity players reaching double figures, and 10 total in the scoring column. The Hawks swept out to an early 9-2 lead, as starting center Richmond Williams (10pts, 6rebs, 1asst) scored 3 of his 5 baskets within the first few minutes. This marked the first time for Williams to reach double figures on the season, but as last season showed, he is a second half of the season player. Hayfield also received second half flurry from F Amir Atkins (22pts, 5rebs, 4assts, 1blk), who scored 12 of his game high 22 in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The Hawks received another balanced game from SG Tyler Seelman (13pts, 4rebs, 5assts, 2stls) who has become one of the Hawks best defensive players, along with him being their primary three point option. The Hawks were also passing the ball very well tonight, amassing 19 assists on their 26 field goals.

Other notable contributions included: PG Tyler Thornton (6pts, 4rebs, 2assts) connected on his only two long range shots, equaling his season total. He also continuously broke down the opponents press with his ultra-quick dribbling. F Chris Johnson led the team with 7 rebounds, and helped shut down one Edison’s big three on offense. Reserve guards Alontae Kyle (3pts, 1reb) and Daquan Poindexter (3pts, 1asst) both hit timely 2nd quarter threes to maintain Hayfield’s first half lead. Senior reserve F Quentin Hutchinson (1pt, 1reb) continued his streak of grabbing a key rebound in a game (3 straight games), and going to the FT line. F/C Montez Wilson (6pts, 3rebs, 1blk, 1asst) had another impressive game, in his first season on varsity, by hitting two clutch baskets down the stretch. Reserve PG Brandon Lawson (4pts, 5rebs, 1asst) continued his comeback from a knee sprain, by dropping in 1 of the Hawks 10 threes, and playing meaningful minutes down the stretch, including capping off the scoring with a free throw with under 30 seconds to play, preserving the Hawks double digit victory.
