PEP RALLY DOES THE TRICK, HAWKS SOAR TO 11

On Friday afternoon, Hayfield Secondary and their student government honored the winter athletes with a pep rally. One of the rallying cries, was for students to come to tonights game, and root on their boys basketball team to victory; it worked, as the Hawks came out victorious 63-47, for their 11th win in a row. The Hawks remained undefeated in National District play, and will again put that record on the line, vs. Yortown HS on Monday (January 14, 2013), in the Hawks Nest. This game is Hayfield’s senior night, and the last home varsity game of the regular season. After that it is seven straight away games, which will be a great test, prepping the Hawks for the district post season.

The Hawks were led tonight, by SG Tyler Seelman (19pts, 5rebs, 2stls, 2blks), who sank 6 (of the Hawks 11) three pointers on the night. For the second game in a row, the Hawks hit double digits from beyond the arc. Senior F Chris Johnson (9pts, 8rebs, 2asts, 2stls) took control of the backboards, grabbing 4 at each end. Hayfield also received excellent play from their reserve underclassmen guards; Phil Guydon (5pts, 2rebs), Faris Gebril (8pts, 3rebs, 1stl, 1blk), and Daquan Poindexter (6pts, 3asts), who all hit from downtown, and played excellent defense along the way.

Basketball is definitely a game of streaks, and this one was no different. The Hawks seemed well on their way to a big night, jumping out to a 25-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Jaguars of Falls Church stormed back however, when trailing by 21, they went on a 12-0 run, to trim lead to 9. Then the Hawks closed the half on a 5-0 run of their own. Again in the third, the Jaguars stalled the Hawks efforts, holding them to 5 points over the first 5 minutes of the quarter, only to see the Hawks take off,  swooping to a 8-2 run to close the third quarter. Falls Church continued to chip away at the Hawks lead in the fourth, although in the end, the 14 point cushion of the 1st quarter proved to be too much of a challenge to overcome.
