RAIDERS AMBUSH HAWKS, 54-52
The Boys Varsity basketball team continued their mid-season lull, with a 2 point loss to National District foe, Jeb Stuart HS. The Raiders stayed with the Hawks throughout the contest, always within striking distance or tied, until the last 30 seconds when they took the lead for good.
Hayfield has now had consecutive losses, for the first time since early December. After the decisive defeat on Monday, it was good to see the Hawks return with energy and determination. This game was a good test for the Hawks, who will need to learn how to play these closely contested games, as they continue to develop and prepare for district and regional playoff games in February. Senior F Chris Johnson (11pts, 6rebs, 2stls), the emotional leader of this team, played with fire in his eyes last night, and gave his all, leaving it all on the court. PG Tyler Thornton (15pts, 3rebs, 2stls, 2asts) had been the burr in their sides all night, twice picking off passes for easy layups.Other notable efforts included: PF Montez Wilson (5pts, 2stls, 1blk) gave valuable minutes down the stretch, and senior C Richmond Williams (13-13) continued his streak of FT success. Reserve guards Phil Guydon (4pts, 1stl) and Faris Gebril (2pts, 4rebs, 1blk) both contributed to help offset the foul trouble of starting SF Amir Atkins, who was saddled with 4 fouls throughout most of the game.
