Score
HAWKS: 82
MOUNT VERNON HIGH: 81

HAWKS WIN AT BUZZER, 82-81
The Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Majors of Mt. Vernon in overtime, when SG Tyler Seelman (26pts, 3rebs, 3asts, 2stls, 2blks), buried a 3 pointer from the top of the perimeter with 2.3 seconds remaining, giving the Hawks a one point victory. The Hawks battled all night, never giving in, even when down by double digits in the second quarter. Trailing by 10 points at the start of the third quarter, the Hawks mounted a furious comeback, spurred by PG Tyler Thornton (13pts, 8stls, 6asts), who put tremendous pressure on the Majors’ ball handlers, leading to several Majors’ turnovers.

The Hawks were able to trim the lead to 1 point, after a 9-0 run in the first 1:30 of the second half. On the following possesion, the Hawks had their first lead, since early in the first quarter. Back came the Majors however, never giving in themselves. Mt. Vernon was able to weather the Hawks run, and gain a slim third quarter lead. In the fourth, the Hawks seemed destined to lose another close game, but reserve SG Phil Guydon (10pts, 1stl, 1ast) leveled the Hawks out, by continously slashing through the Majors defense, for 3 key buckets down the stretch, including a 3 pointer from the left wing. The game seesawed back and fourth, with neither team gaining the upper hand. With just a few ticks on the regulation clock, the Hawks found themselves tied, with a chance to win at the buzzer. It was not to be, as Seelman missed a contested runner from the left. This action however, set up the heroics, less than 4 minutes (on the game clock)later.

The Hawks starting backcourt (Seelman and Thornton) were aided by junior F Amir Atkins (18pts, 6rebs, 2blks), who tipped in an offensive reb during overtime, that helped set up Seelman’s winning shot. Atkins also had a key deflection/steal in the extra period, and snared several key rebounds. Other key contributions included C Richmond Williams (6pts, 6rebs), and Kendrick Mack (2pts, 1reb), who played some key minutes late in the 2nd quarter, and grabbed a key offensive rebound, which helped keep the score manageable.
