WASHINGTON LEE HIGH: 64

HAYFIELD’S WINGS CLIPPED BY GENERALS, 64-61

The Hawks fell back to earth just two days after defeating Mt. Vernon in an overtime thriller, at the hands of the Generals of Washington & Lee HS. Hayfield seemed to be on course for another district win, on the first half sharp shooting of SG Tyler Seelman (18pts, 3asts), who started Thursday’s game as he had ended Tuesday’s game; raining threes.

Unfortunately, the Generals kept Seelman mostly bottled up in the second half, as the Generals kept within striking range. At first though, it seemed that others would pick up the second half slack. Senior PG Brandon Lawson (4pts, 5asts, 3stls) played a solid point, for the latter part of the third quarter, and a good part of the fourth, applying pressure to the Generals ball handlers, and swiping two steals in the process.  PF Chris Johnson (8pts, 5rebs, 2stls)found his long distance range, dropping two threes, and grabbing several rebounds. Junior SG Phil Guydon (4pts, 1reb) saw significant minutes again, and delivered with a clutch three pointer, while sophomore C Dalon Thomas (2pts, 6rebs) provided a solid defensive effort, drawing a charge, and limited the Generals big men on the glass.

As the game came down to the last few minutes, the score grew close again, as the Generals increased their pressure on the Hawks ball handlers. Where in the Mt. Vernon game, the Hawks were able to thrive in the pressure situation, they could not capture that same mojo again. Coupled with 4 missed free throws in the last 2 minutes, spelled the sixth loss of the season, and the third in the last four games.
