HAWKS START FAST, THEN FADE OUT TO WAKEFIELD

The Boys Varsity had a game plan, which if executed could have put them in contention for the district crown. To date, the only team to defeat Wakefield in district play had been the Hawks, with their gritty one point victory earlier this year. In this game, it seemed as if the Hawks had their number again. With just under 3 minutes to play in the first quarter, the Hawks had their opponent on the ropes. The Hawks had played smart basketball, drawing fouls on the Warriors two stars, forcing them to the bench. Everything seemed lined up for a Hawks run.
A run did happen, but it was the Warriors who seized the momentum. Drawing energy from their senior night celebration, and the fact that this would be the last regular season game in their celebrated gymnasium, the Warriors went on a 23-0 run over the next several minutes. The Hawks had no answers, for it seemed their opponent couldn’t miss. Finally the Hawks got rolling again, going on a 10-1 run to close the half, and get to 12 points down.
The Hawks have been down before, and bounced back. It seemed that momentum was coming back, if only the first half hadn’t ended. The Warriors quickly re-established their inside presence, and the game was theirs.
Many of the Hawks gave valient efforts, but the deficit was too great. Reserve SG Phil Guydon (7pts, 1reb, 1blk) came in and gave instant offense, and intensity. At one point, Guydon drove to the basket, and had he had presence of mind, could have dunked it, for his hand was high above the rim. PG Tyler Thornton (3pts, 3rebs, 4asts, 2stls) continued to drive the Hawks offense, but their shots were not falling. SF Amir Atkins (17pts, 10rebs, 3stls, 2asts) continued to battle, often the only threat the Hawks had on the floor. He achieved a double double for the first time this year, including 5 offensive rebounds. Starting C Richmond Williams (7pts, 6rebs) drilled an early 3 pointer, and hit his only 2 free throws, to re-establish his dominance at the FT line (17-19 on the season). SG Tyler Seelman (10pts, 2rebs, 1blk) continued his hot shooting from downtown (39% on the season), and added to his team high in blocked shots (20 on the season).
