BATTLE OF THE BIRDS GOES TO HAYFIELD

The packed gymnasium was going crazy, with chanting back and forth between the loyal faithful of the Hayfield Hawks, and of their hosts, the fans of the Edison Eagles. With the Principals of both schools on the baseline, the two teams each went on runs throughout the game. The first major run went Hayfield’s way, when recently activated SF Kelsey McCrimmon (11pts, 6rebs, 1blk) entered the game in the 2nd quarter. He helped the Hawks to erase a slim deficit in the first quarter, and reverse it into a 10 point lead throughout much of the second quarter. McCrimmon was able to slip behind the Eagles zone defense, and score 2 quick buckets. The Eagles were not going away, chipping the lead down to 7 by the close of the first half.
In the second half, it seemed that Hayfield was finally going to pull away from an opponent, when the Hawks extended their lead to 12 points (42-30) midway through the 3rd quarter. The Eagles had other ideas, promptly taking advantage of the Hawks relaxing on their perimeter defense, by burying 2 threes to trim the lead to six. At the beginning of the 4th quarter, the lead was but 4 points.
With Eagles fans screaming, and the fouls mounting against the Hawks, the Eagles eventually surged in to the lead, shooting 7-9 from the FT line in the fourth. The Hawks were playing solid defense, and did not allow a three pointer in the closing quarter, although the Eagles were finding ways to get open. With the clock running down, it seemed as yet another close game was going to slip through the Hawks talons.
The Hawks fans were undaunted however, urging the Hawks to find their lost mojo. With under 30 seconds to play, the Hawks found themselves down by one 58-57. SF Amir Atkins (13pts, 7rebs, 1stl) and SG Tyler Seelman (10pts, 3rebs, 1blk) worked flawlessly together, as the offense developed. Atkins then set a perfect pick, which Seelman rolled off of, onto the left wing, launching a three pointer as he did, with 17 ticks of the clock left. Seelman’s defender, caught off guard by the pick, lunged forward, just clipping Seelman on the leg, sending the Hawks guard sprawling to the floor. As the shot swished through the net, the referee’s hand went up calling a foul. Seelman calmly hit his free throw, putting the Hawks up three. The Hawks faithful could barely contain themselves, edging ever closer to the court. The Eagles managed to get two fairly clean looks at game tying threes, but it was not to be, as the Hawks completed the season sweep, and retained the Battle of Birds trophy. Then pandemonium ensued, as the Hawks fans could not resist, rushing the court, and mobbing their beloved Hawks, who won their 13th game of the season, and moved into sole possession of 2nd place (8-4) in the National District.
