SOARED BY THE THREE, FELLED BY THE THREE

The Boys Varsity of Hayfield Secondary felt the sting of their own medicine Tuesday night, as the Jaguars of Falls Church HS drilled a three point field goal with less than 5 seconds remaining to defeat the second place Hawks by one point. This game was all but won by Hawks, when they stormed out of halftime, increasing a 3 point cushion up to a 13 point lead (45-32), with a little more than 2 minutes to go in the third quarter. The Jaguars, jubilant from their senior night festivities, never conceded however, reeling off 8 of the next 10 points scored, trimming the Hawks advantage to 9 points. The Jaguars then owned the 4th quarter, doubling up the Hawks 20-10 in the quarter, to win by one.
The Hawks also hurt themselves, missing 12 free throws on the night, but take nothing away from their opponents, who never gave up.The Hawks had many bright spots as well. In a return to the gym where he saw his first varsity action last season, reserve center Dalon Thomas (9pts, 9rebs, 1drawn charge) turned in his best performance of the season. Thomas dominated the defensive glass during most of the second quarter, when the Hawks turned a 5 point deficit into a 3 point lead at the half. Another gritty performance was submitted by PG Tyler Thornton (16pts, 5stls, 3rebs, 3asts), who singlehandedly changed the pace of the second quarter. In one series of events, Thornton hit 5 straight free throws, to erase a three point deficit, and turn it into a 2 point lead. He was fouled on a three point attempt, and he hit two extra free throws (both technicals), due to the Jaguars trying to play with 6 men. Reserve G Faris Gebril (2pts, 4rebs, 1ast) came off the bench and contributed immediately, playing solid defense, and driving the lane for a much needed lay-up. SF Amir Atkins (20pts, 6rebs, 1blk) returned to the twenty point plateau, routinely slicing to the basket, shredding the Jaguars interior defense with short range jumpers and floaters.
