Hawks Push Mustangs to Brink

The Varsity Hawks opened their 2013-2014 Tip-Off Classic ready to play. The Hawks were able to overcome their struggling offense in the first half, to hang tough with the #4 ranked team in Virginia, the Mustangs of Montrose Christian. The past two years have resulted in double digit losses, but that was not to be this year. The Hawks swarmed around the court, getting their hands on several balls, resulting in 12 deflections, 7 steals, along with drawing 4 charges.

          The Hawks, trailing by 3 at the half, overwhelmed the stunned Mustangs in the third, soaring to a 6 point lead with a 18-7 third quarter surge. The Mustangs however, found their groove in the 4^th, overwhelming the Hawks, outscoring the Hawks by 15 in the final frame, to win by 7. The Hawks return to the court on Saturday, vs. Surratsville HS.

The Hawks were led again by Junior PF Dalon Thomas (18pts, 4rebs) and Senior SG Amir Atkins (10pts, 6rebs), who combined to score 28 of Hayfield 49 points.
