Chargers fall prey to the Hawks, 41-28

The Boys Varsity Basketball team returned to the win column on Tuesday night, with a sloppy but opportunistic attack. The Hawks employed a stifling press, and raised the intensity in their man to man defense, to hold the Chargers of Chantilly HS to 28 points, on 27.5% shooting from the floor, and 25% from the FT line. The Hawks struggled at times themselves, including missing 6 FT’s down the stretch, but by that time, the game was pretty much within their talons.

Hayfield’s defense led the flight again this game, amassing 18 deflections, 13 steals, 4 blocks, and drew two charges. The only area where the Hawks had trouble was defending the Chargers on Chantilly’s offensive glass. The Chargers dominated the Off.boards, snagging 17 rebounds, routinely following their misses. Unlucky for them, but fortunate for their visitors, most of their put backs missed as well. C Eliet Donley (6pts, 8rebs, 3blks) was a principle reason for that outcome, often altering his opponents shots with timely blocks. He was aided on defense, by a host of other Hawks, including SG Phil Guydon (2pts, 5rebs, 2stls), who used his long wingspan to help hinder the Chargers passing lanes. Reserve PG Daquan Poindexter (2pts, 2stls, 1blk) was another Hawk, whose spirited defense helped set the tone during the decisive 3^rd quarter, when the Hawks held their opponent to 8 pts. Leading scorer SF Amir Atkins (12pts, 3rebs, 3stls) was the only player in double figures (on either team). SG Tyler Hodge (7pts, 2rebs) had another solid game coming off the bench, including an outstanding catch ‘n shoot from an inbounds pass, resulting in a three ball from the right corner; all that could be heard was “swish”!
