Hawks Soar Over Eagles in Glory Days Opener

The Boys Varsity returned to the hard court the day after Christmas, and stretched their Glory Days Tourney winning streak to four, with a 74-64 defeat of the Eagles of Mills Godwin HS (Henrico Co.). The Hawks showed little sign of rust, jumping out to a 14-7 lead at the end of the 1^st quarter (a lead they never relinquished). The game plan for the Hawks, was to play inside-out basketball, and they implemented this plan early, as PF Dalon Thomas(19pts, 4rebs) scored 6 points from the block in the 1^st quarter. In the second half, as the Eagles began to make a run, the Hawks returned to that game plan as C Eliet Donley (12pts, 4rebs, 1blk) scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half from the low block.

As both teams began to pressure the basketball in the second half, it seemed to have the opposite effect of its intended purpose, as both squads opened up their offensive games (scoring 45 points apiece in the second half). As he so frequently does, SG Amir Atkins (20pts, 5rebs, 4stls) took over in the second half, scoring 15 of his 20 points. SG Phil Guydon (8pts, 1reb, 1ast) broke out with 2 swishes from beyond the arc, as both he and Atkins hit timely threes in the 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th quarters. The Hawks will return to Lake Braddock HS on Friday, when they take the court with the Chargers of Chantilly HS, in a much anticipated rematch.
