Hawks Put It All Together, Wear Out Titans

The Boys Varsity Hawks rang in the new year, with their most complete game of the season. Hayfield had their best shooting night of the season, hitting 52% from the floor overall, including 8 from beyond the arc, and converting 17 shots in the paint. The Hawks almost completely dominated the game, only losing one quarter (1st – 13-14), and scored over twenty points in the last 3 quarters, to defeat the Titans of TC Williams by 27 points (beating their highest margin of victory by 3 points).

The Hawks had a balanced attack, as they had 3 players in double figures (for the second straight game), and all the Hawks scored at least 1 point during Saturday evening. The Boys Varsity was able to get the lone win vs. TC, as the Titans were able to defeat the other 5 Hawks squads during the afternoon/evening.

Hayfield had different stars in each of the quarters. SF Amir Atkins (16pts, 7rebs) got the Hawks soaring during the first quarter tallying 7 of the Hawks first 13 points. The second quarter belonged to two of the Hawks reserves, as PF Montez Wilson (4pts, 2rebs) was able to use his athleticism to hurdle the Titans in the paint, while SF Kelsey McCrimmon (9pts, 4rebs, 1blk) found his range from downtown, dropping in 2 of his 3 three pointers. C Eliet Donley (14pts, 13rebs, 2blks) found his range from the line, connecting on his four attempts in the 2nd quarter (overall he sank his first 6, and the Hawks splashed their first 9). The Hawks withstood a brief comeback by the Titans at the end of the second, but exploded for 45 points in the second half.

Coming out in the third quarter, SG Faris Gebril (12pts, 2rebs, 3assts) took over, hitting for 9 of the Hawks 25 points in the quarter, including a vintage Dr. J’ esque double pump layup straight down the heart of the Titans interior defense. He was aided by SF Muharrim Haque (6pts, 3rebs, 1blk), who gobbled up two offensive rebounds, and swishing both put backs to keep TC at bay. The fourth quarter was a collective effort, as 8 different Hawks scored, including reserves, PG Kyle Phox (2pts), SG Eddy Biniam (1-2 from the line), and PG Daquan Poindexter (2pts, 1reb) who hit the last free throws to cap the Hawks first win of the new year, and to go two games above .500
