The Boys Varsity of Hayfield Secondary lost a hard fought contest last night, to end their most recent win streak. The Hawks and Warriors (of Wakefield HS) were equal to the task, as the game seesawed throughout the evening, with neither team ever up by more than the half time score of 27-21 (Wakefield). The Hawks were up four, with fewer than two minutes left in the 4th quarter, but were unable to close the deal, as the Warriors employed a ¾ court press, which forced the Hawks to lose possession on successive trips. Those mistakes allowed the Warriors to draw even with less than 30 seconds to play. The game seemed destined for overtime, until a reserve guard from Wakefield flushed a 20+ foot three pointer as time expired, giving Wakefield a 3 point win.
The Hawks were paced by C Eliet Donley (13pts, 7rebs, 2assts, 1blk), who almost carried the Hawks to victory with 3 field goals in the 4th quarter. He was joined in double figures by PF Dalon Thomas (11pts, 2rebs, 1asst, 1blk), who rebounded from injury in the Centerville game, and SF Amir Atkins (11pts, 8rebs, 2stls) who led the Hawks with 7 points in the 3rd quarter, and led the Hawks in rebounding. Reserve guard Kyle Phox (3pts, 1deflection) spelled injured SG Phil Guydon (sprained ankle), and connected on his first three pointer of the 2013-2014 season.
