Strong Start Propels Hawks To Victory, Defeat Patriots by 29

What a difference a year makes. On this exact date last year, the Patriots visited Hayfield, as the Hawks were cruising on an eleven game win streak. That streak did not reach 12, as the Patriots handed Hayfield one of their most lopsided defeats (70-42) of the season. The Hawks reversed the outcome tonight, in just as dramatic a fashion. The Hawks defense was stellar tonight, soaring around and over the Patriots, limiting them to two field goals in the first 8 minutes. The Hawks used a 9-0 run to start the game, were up 13-2 with just under 4 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter, and led 27-4 by its close.

The Boys Varsity was firing on all cylinders, bouncing back from the tough defeat to Wakefield, shooting 9-15 overall from the field in the first quarter, and also hitting 7 of 7 from the line. They were even better from the floor in the 2nd, only missing on 4 field goal attempts (7-11). In the third quarter, Yorktown started to press, but the Hawks were not to be denied, outscoring the Patriots by 7, to push the lead to 34. In the 4th, the Hawks played ball control offense, taking precious minutes off the clock every trip up the floor.

Tonight’s heroes were every Hawk who took the floor, for they all brought their defensive “A” game, which totally overwhelmed the Patriots on their home floor. Notable efforts included: PG Tyler Thornton (12pts, 4rebs, 4stls, 2assts), who set the tone with high intensity pressure on the Patriots point guard. C Eliet Donley (14pts, 6rebs, 2stls, 2blks) who continued to shine in his first season with Hayfield. Donley was very effective in the decisive 1st quarter, and followed it up with a 3 basket 3rd period. SF Amir Atkins (11pts, 5rebs) reached double figures for the 12th time (in 13 games) this season.

In their last game vs. Wakefield, free throws did the Hawks in. In this contest, Phil Guydon (5pts, 1reb, 1asst) got the Hawks off to a great start however, swishing all three of his chances, after being fouled on his 3 ball. PF Montez Wilson (8pts, 4rebs, 1stl) continued his strong play off the bench, leading all reserves in scoring.
