HAWKS: 69
MCLEAN HS: 40

Hawks Find the Range, Vanquish Highlanders By 29

The Boys Varsity, playing for the third game in four days, turned in one of their best games of the season, with a drubbing of their Liberty Conference rival, the Highlanders of McLean HS. Facing McLean for the second time this season, the Hawks were able to exploit the Highlanders with a withering press, which resulted in 11 steals, and numerous more stops. The Highlanders had one lone quarter, where they found their groove, but otherwise were worn down and out by the Hawks unrelenting defense. In the 3rd quarter, when the Highlanders were able to score, they were almost single handedly matched by SG Phil Guydon (16pts, 3asts, 2stls), who buried 3 of his game high 4 three pointers.

The Hawks turned up the heat at both ends of the floor, in the 3rd quarter, when they outscored McLean by 4 (26-22), following that effort with a +13 point differential (19-6) in the culminating quarter. Joining Guydon in double figures was C Eliet Donley (14pts, 7rebs, 1ast, 1stl), who scored over 10 points for the 9th time this season. Also finding double digits was SF Amir Atkins (11pts, 5rebs, 3stls), who had another solid all around game.

The Hawks most impressive stat, other than winning by 29, was their perfect percentage from the line in the second half (8-8). The Hawks have not always been keen on free throw shooting, but since the loss last Friday night, the Hawks are a combined 27-32. One of the main reasons is Atkins, who has now made 20 straight from the line.

Other key contributions included: Daquan Poindexter (5pts, 2asts, 3dflcts), who matched his season high for the 3rd time this season, and whose frenetic defense proved disastrous for the Highlanders ball handlers. Reserve SG Eddy Biniam (2pts, 2rebs, 1ast) forced a key turnover (5 count) for the Hawks in the 4th quarter. SG Tyler Hodge (5pts, 2rebs, 1ast, 1blk) played a solid second half, including a key three point play, which helped to extinguish a Highlander rally. PF Montez Wilson (4pts, 11rebs, 2asts, 2stls) was a monster on the offensive glass (team high 7), keeping many Hawks possessions alive.SF Muharrim Haque (1ast, 1stl) had a pretty assist on a key fast break in the 2nd quarter, and played solid defense against bigger and taller opponents. The Hawks return to action on Friday, when they travel to another Liberty Conference rival; Langley HS.
