Donley Dominates, Hawks Rally For 12th Win

The Varsity Hawks, were held to 41 points for the second time this season, yet found a way to rally vs. the Saxons of Langley HS. Last night, the Hawks, shooting for their 12th victory of the season, could not find the range against Langley’s seemingly impenetrable 2-3 zone. The Saxons had done their homework, for they seemed to even know the names of Hayfield’s plays. The zone and that knowledge gave them an edge, which they exploited in the 1st half, to take a 5 point lead in to halftime.

The Hawks had the answer; get the ball to C Eliet Donley (18pts, 17rebs, 3blks, 2chrgs). Donley single handedly defeated the Saxons in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Saxons by 8, with 12 of the Hawks 15 third quarter points. On the occasions when Donley’s post move did not equal a basket, he would convert his free throws (at one point he made 10 in a row from the line, including all 4 in the third). He was a force on the defensive glass as well, leading the team with 10 rebounds (along with 7 offensive), and 3 blocks. That outburst gained the Hawks the lead, which they didn’t relinquish. In the 4th quarter, SF Amir Atkins (9pts, 3rebs, 1ast, 1stl) found his rhythm, dropping in a three pointer to halt the Saxons rally, and then he stole a midcourt pass, and finished with a left-handed dunk, with a defender in tow.

Notable contributions included: SG Phil Guydon (3pts, 2asts) is now 8-15 from downtown in the last four games. PG Tyler Thornton (5pts, 1ast, 1stl) battled foul trouble all night, but was able to add to his team highs in steals and assists, and hit a clutch three in the decisive 3rd quarter. C Montez Wilson (3rebs, 2blks) helped seal the win with a key defensive rebound late in the 4th, plus altered many a Saxon shot in the 4th quarter. Overall the Hawks blocked 6 shots on the evening. The Hawks next opponent is Fairfax HS on Tuesday, at the Hawks Nest!
