 Stallions Rein-in Hawks 53-51

The Varsity Hawks started off their 2014-2015 season with a nail-biting loss to their cross town rivals, the Stallions of South County HS. This game was a see-saw affair, with each team never being up by more than 8 points at any one time. The Hawks seemed to have found their wings, when with a little over two minutes remaining, they soared ahead 51 -43. The Stallions were not fazed however, as they calmly buried two 3 pointers to trim the lead to 51-49, with 1:23 remaining. The Hawks had their chances, but it was not to be, as the home team scored the final 10 points of the game, to win by 2.

This game saw the debuts of several new varsity Hawks, including Freshman SG Brian Cobbs (3pts), Sophomore PG Will Douglas (1 rebs, 1dfls), and F/C Corey McGhee (1 stl). The Hawks were paced by Senior PF Dalon Thomas

(15pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts, 1stl). Thomas also set a current Hayfield mark, by drawing 4 charges tonight. Thomas was joined in double figures by PF/C Jeremy Jones (10pts, 2rebs,1stl, 1 blk), who helped the Hawks out to their largest lead of the night.

Other key contributors included: SF Muharrim Haque (6pts, 8rebs, 3asts, 2stls, 1blk, 4 dfls) who led the Hawks in rebounding, while SF Kelsey McCrimmon (6pts, 3rebs, 3asts, 1stl) tied Haque for the team lead in assists.  SF Tyler Hodge (6pts, 6rebs, 3stls) had two picturesque drives to the hoop during the Hawks run, hanging and swooping to avoid would be charges. Hodge and Haque teamed up to snag 9 offensive rebounds from the SF position. PG Daquan Poindexter (5pts, 2asts, 3stls) began his senior season, by swishing the only Hawk 3 pointer of the evening, while reserve PG Kyle Phox (1 reb, 1stl, 1ast, 2dfls)added intensity on the ball, while helping lead the Hawks in their high pressure defense (the Hawks had 15 total steals, and 14 total deflections).

The Hawks return to the hardwood on Friday, 12/5/14 when they host Montrose Christian in our 4th annual Tip-Off classic at 7:30. The Hawks will also host West Springfield HS on Saturday, 12/6/14 to cap off the tourney.
