Hawks Soar Over Jaguars for First Win

The Hayfield Boys Basketball team went on the road looking for their first win of the season, and found it in a big way. The Hawks led the Jaguars of FCHS almost wire to wire, winning all four quarters, on route to a convincing 17 point victory (72-55). While the Hawks had not put together any convincing defensive stands except for the first quarter vs. Montrose Christian, this game was all about defense, with the Hawks limiting the Jags to an average of 13.75 points per quarter, by amassing 13 steals, 19 deflections, and 6 blocks.

Hayfield was led by their stoic leader, SF Muharrim Haque (10pts, 11rebs, 5dflctns), who controlled the defensive glass all night. Although giving up 2 to 5 inches on average in every game to his opponents, Muharrim is the epitome of hustle, grit, and determination. Known for his ability to get to the offensive glass, Muharrim took it upon himself, to establish a presence on the defensive glass tonight, as he continues to help the Hawks weather the injury to starting center, Eliet Donley.

The Hawks had a very balanced attack tonight. Including Haque, the Hawks had three other players in double figures, led by PF/C Dalon Thomas (13pts, 4rebs), who shot a perfect 6-6 from the field. Reserve SF Aaron Jeter (10pts, 3rebs) led the bench scoring (31 of the 72 total points), while spot starter SG Kyle Phox (10pts, 4stls, 2blks) led the defensive charge in the first quarter by snaring 4 steals over the first 5 minutes.

Other contributions included: Freshman SG Brian Cobbs (4pts, 1ast), who drilled a 3 pointer in the closing seconds to put Hayfield over 70 points for the first time this season. Soph. PG Will Douglas (3pts, 1reb, 2asts, 1stl) played meaningful minutes in the 4th, and threw a Rondo-esque one handed bounce pass for a pretty assist. PF/C Jeremy Jones (6pts, 5rebs, 2blks) made his presence felt immediately, with two first half blocks. Overall the Hawks had 20 assists, with a team high 4 each from PG Daquan Poindexter (3pts, 4asts, 2stls, 6dflctns) and SF Tyler Hodge (5pts, 5rebs, 4asts).

The Hawks return to the hardwood on Friday night for the annual Bird Ball game; when Hayfield hosts the Edison Eagles. It should be a soaring affair, so don’t miss it. Game time 7:30pm
