Hayfield Stymie’s Dwight (NY) in First Game of Waldorf Christmas Tourney

The Hawks, in desperate need of a solid game, received a well needed Christmas present, earning an 11 point victory over The Dwight School of NY City. Dwight School has two legitimate stars, who gave the Hawks everything they could handle for the better part of 3.5 quarters. However, it was the Hawks stifling 2nd half press that turned the tide in the Hawks favor, as Hayfield turned several Dwight turnovers into easy baskets. Dwight School also employed a press, which at first confused the Hawks guards, but then was routinely exploited for several lay-ups down the stretch. In the end, Hayfield ended their 2 game slide, and gained their 2nd victory of the season. The Hawks next take on one of the hosts of this tourney, North Point HS Saturday, 12/27 at 6:15pm

The Hawks distributed the ball well last night, accumulating 20 assists for the second time this season, led by PF Dalon Thomas (9pts, 12rebs, 6asts, 2stls, 5dflctns), who dished out 6 himself, and led the Hawks in rebounding too. Hayfield received a much needed boost from Jr. SG Romaine Oakley (11pts, 1ast, 1stl), who came off the bench to hit three times from downtown, and play smothering “D” in the Hawks press defense. SF Kelsey McCrimmon (16pts, 8rebs, 4asts) again led  the Hawks in scoring, and snared a team high 4 offensive rebounds. SG Tyler Hodge (12pts, 6rebs, 2asts) was the go to guy in the fourth, thrice exploiting Dwight’s interior defense, with 2 buckets, and two free throws to lead the Hawks with 6 of their game high 24 fourth quarter points.

Other contributions included: PF Jeremy Jones (6pts, 4rebs, 1ast, 1stl) who filled in well off the bench. PG Daquan Poindexter (2pts, 5asts, 1stl) kept the Dwight defenders honest, as he swarmed to the ball in defense, and found open Hawks for key baskets, with 5 helpers of his own. Fr. SG Brian Cobbs (3pts) received his first varsity start, and connected for the Hawks only 1st quarter three ball. SG Kyle Phox (4pts, 3rebs, 2stls) made his 3rd start of the season, and led the Hawks with 4 first quarter points, and came back in the 4th quarter to settle down the offense during Dwight’s pressing attempts.

Pts. Scored By: Poindexter (2), Phox (4), McCrimmon (16), Hodge (12), Jones (6), Biniam (0), Oakley (11), Donley (IR), Haque (4), Douglas (0), Thomas (9), Cobbs (3), Jeter (0), McGhee (0)
