Hawks Stumble into 2015, Lose to Saints by 16

So far, the New Year has not been rosy for the Hawks of Hayfield Secondary. On Saturday, the Hawks lost another key player to injury, when reserve SF Aaron Jeter had his left thumb broken upon a collision with another players’ knee. The Hawks have also been without starting C Eliet Donley since the preseason (broken hand), and thus a promising season has yet to find purchase.

Tonight, on a rare Monday late afternoon game (6pm), the Boys Varsity traveled to nearby St. Stephens and St. Agnes, for a matchup with the Saints. St. Stephens dominated this game throughout, never once playing from behind, while the Hawks struggled to find any offensive rhythm. Of course, the height factor (St. Stephens fields 3 players over 6’7”) played a role in this latest setback, but many of the areas of opportunity lay in the Hawks unwillingness to run their offense, their inability to make consistent stops at the defensive end, and another poor shooting night. Although, there were a few bright spots to brag about.

The Hawks were led tonight by their starting PG Daquan Poindexter (12pts, 7asts, 3stls), who connected on his first 3 shots from beyond the arc, and led the team with a season high 7 dimes. Another Hawk who soared tonight was SF Tyler Hodge (16pts, 6rebs) who has now scored double figures for 5 straight games (14.2pts/game). Fr. SG Brian Cobbs (6pts, 1reb,3dflctns) had another solid game, and scored a season high 6pts, while converting all 4 of his free throws to raise his average to 88% on the season. PF Dalon Thomas (3pts, 12rebs) giving up as much as 5 inches in height to his opposing numbers tonight, struggled from the floor, but grabbed a team high 12 rebounds. He also drew his team leading 15th charge (1.5 chrgs/game).

The Varsity Boys originally planned to return to action on Tuesday night, but their game with Centreville has been cancelled due to snow, make up date TBD.
