STUART HS: 58

Hawks Soar to 3rd Straight Win

The Boys Varsity from Hayfield Secondary journeyed to Jeb Stuart HS, and came away with their third straight victory. The Hawks never trailed in this game, jumping out to a 17-6 lead 6 minutes into the 1st quarter. Stuart would not go away however, often trimming the lead to 4 points on multiple occasions during the 2nd  quarter, including a 12-2 run, closing to within that 4 point margin at the end of 16 minutes.

The Hawks were able to double that lead by the end of the 3rd, and then finally put the Raiders away by 14 points; 72-58. The Raiders were very successful at the charity stripe, where the Hawks placed them routinely in the 2nd half, allowing them to stay in the game. Hayfield used a shortened rotation on Tuesday night, with only 10 active players, and only 6 finding the scoring column. Reserve PF Jeremy Jones (13pts, 8rebs, 2blks) earned a start on Tuesday night, and had a big second half, scoring all of his points in the final 16 minutes, including swishing a three from the deep left corner.

Jones was joined in double figures by 4 other Hawks, including C Eliet Donley (19pts, 11rebs, 3asts, 2blks), who often drew a double team, allowing him to find open teammates on the low block. PG’s Daquan Poindexter (10pts, 9asts*, 5stls) and Kyle Phox (10pts, 3asts, 3stls) were swarming on defense, racking up 8 steals between them. At one point, Poindexter became a one man force, as he stripped the Raiders on three straight possessions, leading to three straight lay-ups for him. Hayfield also had one of its best games of the season from the free throw line, converting 18 of 23 (78.3%). The Hawks were led in that category by SF Muharrim Haque (8pts, 2rebs, 1stl), who nailed all 5 of his. Donley also went to the line 11 times, connecting 9 times.

Hayfield returns to action on Friday night, with a home match-up vs. Madison HS, followed by another home game on Saturday afternoon (1:30pm) vs. the Titans of TC Williams.

*new season and career high for Daquan Poindexter.
