Hayfield Soars to 10th Straight Victory

It was by no means easy tonight, but the Boys Varsity of Hayfield Secondary was able to overcome a spirited group from Centreville HS, to achieve their 10th straight win, and improve to 13-8 on the season. It has been exactly one month since their last loss, an 8 point defeat to then #4 Wakefield HS. Since then, the Hawks have found their wings, although the winds have not always been calm. Within this winning streak, there have been two one point victories, and two blow outs. All the others have been competitive games up until the end, and tonight was no exception.

Hayfield, playing a rare non-conference game this late in the season (due to a snow cancellation make-up game), elected to start their next generation of starters, to give them a chance to start, and to begin to mold their chemistry for next season. Given a challenge from the coaching staff, the potential 2015-2016 starting line-up, came out with a fury, especially on the offensive glass, where Jr. SF Aaron Jeter (7pts, 8rebs, 1blk) and Jr. PF/C Corey McGhee (5pts, 7 rebs, 2blks) each snatched 4 apiece in the first 8 minutes. McGhee also had an emphatic rejection on the defensive end. McGhee also registered his first basket of the season, and added 3 free throws (shooting 75%). Jeter, playing just his third game back from injury was seemingly everywhere, and paced the Hawks with 5 first quarter points.

Starting with that duo, were Jr. SG Romaine Oakley (1 reb, 1ast), who found Jeter with a sizzling baseline pass, leading to a score, So. PG Will Douglas (2stls, 3dflctns)  padded his steal total with 2 in the first quarter, and Fr. Brian Cobbs (3pts, 4rebs, 1ast), who started his 4th game of the season (3 during the Holiday Tourney), and poured in his 5th three pointer of the season, placing him 6th on the team in total three’s made.

In the second quarter, the game took a turn, as Centreville found their outside game, with two deep balls, and two baseline jumpers, giving them the lead several times during the second 8 minutes. The Hawks returned to their traditional line-up, with SG Tyler Hodge (17pts, 6rebs, 1stl, 2blks) leading the charge, pacing the Hawks with 6 points in the quarter, and 17 for the game. With his help, the Hawks entered halftime, one point up.

The third quarter displayed a bit more traditional Hawk style, as Hayfield ran out to a 11-2 run to begin the 3rd quarter. That gave them a 10 point edge, but they were by no means safe, as Centreville closed the quarter on a 9-5 run, cutting the lead to 6. The fourth seemed to be much of the same, with the Wildcats continuing their hot play, outscoring the Hawks 6-2 to open the final 8 minutes.  Hodge and C Eliet Donley (15pts, 10rebs, 3blks) re-discovered their hot hands, each scoring 8 points, leading the Hawks to their best scoring quarter of the game (20pts). The Hawks as a whole, shot 12-14 from the charity stripe to help closeout the victory, including 4 each from Hodge and Donley. PG Kyle Phox (2pts, 2rebs) came on to spell PG Daquan Poindexter, and chipped in with 2 free throws himself.

Other key contributors included: PG Daquan Poindexter (3rebs, 2asts, 2stls, 4dflctns), added to his team lead in assists, registering his 84th and 85th of the season, to pull within 2 of former teammate Tyler Thornton’s 2012-2013 total. SF Kelsey McCrimmon (3pts, 3rebs, 5dflctns) added to his team lead in made three pointers with his 21st of the season. SF Muharrim Haque (2pts, 6rebs, 2asts, 1stl) is within one rebound shy of the century mark (when he reaches, he will become the third Hayfield player to grab 100 rebounds this season). He is also second on the team with 49 offensive rebounds. PF Dalon Thomas (3pts, 3rebs, 2asts) currently leads the Hawks with 141 rebounds, and drew his 30th charge of the season (a modern day Hawks season record).

Pts. Scored By: Poindexter (0), Phox (2), McCrimmon (3), Hodge (17), Jones (6), Oakley (0), Donley (15), Haque (2), Douglas (0), Thomas (3), Cobbs (3), Jeter (7), McGhee (5),
