Hawks Nest Not Friendly to Hayfield in Season Opener

The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team tipped off their 2015-2016 campaign, with a tough loss to their neighbors from West Potomac HS. At first it seemed that the Hawks would soar to victory, as they scored at will during the first 6 minutes, on route to 21 first quarter points. Unfortunately that is where their momentum ended, only managing to score 28 points throughout the remainder of the evening. West Potomac HS dominated the offensive glass, snatching 22 rebounds, scoring 16 from those chances alone, while connecting 9 for 17 from beyond the arc, to post 69 total points on the Hawks (outscoring Hayfield 53 – 28 over the last 24 minutes).

Hayfield was paced by Junior SF Langston Gaither (16pts, 3rbs), and Senior SG Romaine Oakley (10pts, 2asts), who both scored in double figures for the first time in their Hayfield varsity careers. Senior SF Aaron Jeter (7pts, 9rbs, 5asts) was the best all-around player, as he was seemingly everywhere, all night long. Jeter made several excellent passes, including a seeing eye three quarter court chest pass to a streaking Oakley, who caught it in stride and laid it in for one of Hayfield’s few bright moments. Senior C Corey McGhee (5pts, 3rbs, 2blks) struggled with foul trouble, but still recorded two outstanding blocks.

Other notable efforts included: Sophomore SG Brian Cobbs (4pts, 3rbs, 1stl), who burst onto the Hayfield varsity scene last year as a  freshman, started and helped the Hawks surge out to an early lead. Senior PF Will Miles (2pts, 1rbs) came off the bench early, and scored the first varsity basket of his career, and provided staunch interior defense. Sophomore PG Luke Jones (2pts) also found the basket for his first varsity points. Jones provided tenacious on the ball defense early in the 2nd quarter, and again as Hayfield tried to come back in the 4th. Senior PF Mohamed Mahmoud (0pts, 2rbs) also saw his first varsity action, and collected his first two defensive rebounds. Senior SG Terrell Wheeler (0pts, 2rbs) provided valuable minutes in the fourth quarter, shadowing West Potomac’s guards, while Junior C Kareem Hamadouche spelled McGhee for a few minutes in the 2nd quarter, and registered his first steal of his varsity career. Junior PF Cam Wilkerson (3pts), finally solved West Potomac’s interior defense late in the fourth, but by then it was too late. Juniors Ja’eon Curetan, and Carrington Brox also saw their first varsity action as well.

  Pts. Scored By: Oakley (10), Cobbs (4), Douglas (dnp), Jeter (7), McGhee (5), Curetan (0), Jones (2), Wilkerson (3), Gaither (16), Brox (0), Wheeler (0), Mahmoud (0), Miles (2), Hamadouche (0)
