Reserves Power Hayfield to Win |
The Boys Varsity Hawks bounced back from their biggest loss of the season, clipping the Highlanders of Mclean 49-48, for their 2nd win of the young 2015-2016 season. Hayfield was led by a sophomore and a senior, both coming off the bench, who combined for 31 points, giving Hayfield a much needed boost, propelling them to their first Liberty Conference win, and evening their conference record to 1 and 1.
The Senior, SG/SF Terrell Wheeler (16pts, 5rbs, 1ast, 1stl) registered the best game of his varsity career, doing most of his damage from downtown (3 for 4), although his most outstanding play came when he soared high for an offensive rebound, off his only three point miss, and put it back in for two. The sophomore, PG Luke Jones (15pts, 4stls, 1ast) achieved his first double figure game at the varsity level, as well as converting his first three ball of the season. Even with the outstanding play of these two reserves, the Hawks needed two key free throws from Senior SF Aaron Jeter (8pts, 4rebs, 4stls) in last seconds to secure the victory, as his last two points pushed Hayfield’s lead to four with 7.1 seconds. That margin was much needed, as McLean nailed a three in the closing seconds, and almost secured a foul on the shot, but the Christmas spirit was in the air, deeming the Hawks “good”, allowing Hayfield to escape with their first conference victory, 49-48.\
Other contributors included: Senior SG Romaine Oakley (5pts, 4rebs, 2stls) tied Jr. PF Cam Wilkerson (2pts, 5rebs, 2stls, 1blk) with 4 offensive rebounds in the game, while Wilkerson pushed his team lead to 28 total offensive rebounds for the season. Jr. Ja’eon Curetan (0pts, 4asts) led the Hawks in assists, while Sr. C Corey McGhee (2pts, 6rebs, 2asts, 3 blks) added to his team high in blocked shots (11). Sr. PF Will Miles (0pts, 1reb, 2dflctns) came off the bench early to spark the press defense, registering 2 deflections, and grabbing a defensive rebound to help keep the Highlanders on their heals. Pts. Scored By: Oakley (5), Cobbs (dnp), Douglas (1), Jeter (8), McGhee (2), Curetan (0), Jones (15), Wilkerson (2), Gaither (dnp), Brox (0), Wheeler (16), Mahmoud (dnp), Miles (0), Hamadouche (dnp)
