Jan 8, 2016
Score
HAWKS: 50
FAIRFAX HS: 56

Hawks Repelled by Rebels in 4th , Fall to 1-3 in conference

Hayfield Boys’ Varsity, struggling over the last 7 quarters (57 points over that stretch, 8 pts/qrtr), finally found their groove in the last 8 minutes of Friday night’s game, erupting for 24 points, to almost catch their Liberty Conference (LC) rival, the Rebels of Fairfax HS, ultimately falling 56-50, in what became a tight game in the last quarter. The Hawks deployed their full court press, to rattle the Rebels, who seemingly had the game all but won. That defense, and some timely (and sorely missed) outside shooting, ignited Hayfield’s charge.

Jr. PG Langston Gaither (21pts, 6rebs, 2stls) returned to the court for the first time in 2016, to pace the Hawks in scoring. Gaither, shaking off the rust, found the bottom of the net three times (4 overall) from 20 plus feet during the near comeback, eclipsing the 20 point mark for the first time in his Hayfield varsity career. Gaither was joined in double figures by Sr. SF Aaron Jeter (12pts, 6rebs, 2asts), who also saved his best for the 4th, scoring 3 key baskets in the key down the stretch. In the end though, Hayfield’s 26% overall shooting percentage was too much to overcome, as the Hawks lost their 3rd LC game of the 2015-2016 season.

Other contributions included: Jr. SF Carrington Brox (5pts, 2rebs, 1ast, 1blk) received his first start of the season, and played spirited defense, and connected on his second three pointer of the season. Sr. SG Romaine Oakley (8pts, 3rebs, 3asts), paced the Hawks with 3 dimes, and found the range from three twice, to help the Hawks match their season high of 7 made three pointers. Sr. C Corey McGhee (4pts, 8rebs, 3blks) rounded out the scoring, as Hayfield received a season low from their bench (0pts, on 0-8 from the field, including 5 missed three pointers).

Pts. Scored By: Oakley (8), Cobbs (dnp), Douglas (0), Jeter (12), McGhee (4), Curetan (dnp), Jones (0), Wilkerson (0), Gaither (21), Brox (5), Wheeler (0), Mahmoud (dnp), Miles (dnp), Hamadouche (0), Joiner (dnp)
