Hawks Lose Flight, Fall to Patriots by 8

While being at home seemed a plus versus W&L earlier this week, last night the Boys Varsity seemed stuck in neutral for most of their game vs. the Patriots of Yorktown HS. Hayfield never really got it going, finally finding their groove in the 4th quarter, led by inspired bench play from reserves Will Douglas, Carrington Brox, Cam Wilkerson, and Terrell Wheeler who accounted for all 19 points scored by the Hawks in the final 8 minutes. This loss, their 4th in conference, dropped the Hawks to 6th in the Liberty Conference, 3 games behind front running Madison HS.

Jr. PG Will Douglas (10pts, 4asts, 3stls), recently a forgotten man in the rotation, rebounded with his best overall game of the season, penetrating the Patriots interior defense often in the 4th quarter, leading to several easy baskets for Jr’s Cam Wilkerson (5pts, 1reb, 1stl), and Carrington Brox (4pts, 4rebs). Douglas paced the Hawks with 4 assists, and scored 8 of his 10 points in the final frame. The Hawks were led in scoring by Sr. Romaine Oakley (12pts, 3rebs), who did all of his damage in the first half, including converting a rare 4 point play in the second quarter.

Hayfield struggled last night keeping the Patriots of the glass, allowing their opponents to rack up 15 offensive rebounds, while only amassing 12 defensive rebounds in response. For the first time this season, the Hawks were led in rebounding by three players, who snared 4 rebounds each. Hayfield’s other foil, were fouls, which led to allowing the Patriots 36 free throw attempts, including 20 in the fourth quarter alone. Still Hayfield remained within striking distance, but was never able to get that big shot or rally.

Other contributions included: Sr. Aaron Jeter (9pts, 3rebs, 2asts), who continued to give his trademark 110% no matter the outcome. Jr. Langston Gaither (6pts, 4 rebs, 1ast) combined with Brox and Sr. Corey McGhee (2pts, 4 rebs, 2blks) to lead the team in rebounding. Sr. Terrell Wheeler (4pts, 2rebs, 1blk), another member of the 4th quarter comeback crew, hit two key baskets in the key, in his attempt to rally his team. Sr. Moh Mahmoud (1reb, 1ast, 1blk) came off the bench to spark the defense, including a key block in the third quarter.

Pts. Scored By: Oakley (12), Cobbs (0), Douglas (10), Jeter (9), McGhee (2), Curetan (0), Jones (0), Wilkerson (5), Gaither (6), Brox (4), Wheeler (4), Mahmoud (0), Miles (dnp), Hamadouche (dnp), Joiner (dnp)
