Hawks Lose Season Series to Saxons

While this season has been fairly difficult for the Hawks, especially after capturing the Liberty Conference Crown the season before, last night truly illustrated Hayfield’s struggles. The Hawks were hosting the Saxons, from Langley HS. The Saxons came in sporting the best conference record to date, in part due to Hayfield knocking off the 2nd seed, the Warhawks of Madison HS, earlier this season. Hayfield, the winner of 3 out of the last 4 games, desperately needed to knock off the Saxons, to strengthen their LC seeding, for next week’s conference tournament. Unfortunately, the undermanned Hawks were unable to get going, and take advantage of Langley’s slow start, ultimately falling by seventeen, 51-34.

Hayfield will have to play the remainder of the season, without their starting PG, Langston Gaither, after Gaither sustained a toe injury. In his stead, Hayfield started Sr. SG Terrell Wheeler (7pts, 3rebs, 1blk), who nailed two of Hayfield’s 4 three pointers on the evening. Wheeler and Sr. SG Romaine Oakley (7pts, 2asts) led the Hawks in scoring this day; the first time this season that Hayfield did not have at least one player score in double figures. Hayfield in fact only eclipsed double digits as a team, in the third quarter, with 10 points.

Other contributions included: So. SG/SF Brian Cobbs (5pts, 5rebs, 3asts) pushed his season assist total to 35, second only to Sr. SF Aaron Jeter (2pts, 5rebs, 2asts), who increased his team lead in assists to 45. Sr. C Corey McGhee (6pts, 2rebs, 3stls, 1blk) added to both his blocks total (26), and deflections total (76), both tops on this squad. Jr. PG Will Douglas (2pts, 1stl) came on to score two of Hayfield’s 7 fourth quarter points, converting both if his FT attempts,  bringing his made FT total to 21 (5th on the team). Jr. SF Carrington Brox (5pts, 1-2 from downtown), scored 5 of Hayfield 8 second quarter points. Sr. PF Will Miles, made the most his playing time, by grabbing 3 rebounds, blocking two shots, and making a steal in the last two minutes. With those two blocks, Miles moved into 2nd on the team, trailing only McGhee.

Pts. Scored By: Oakley (7), Cobbs (5), Douglas (2), Jeter (2), McGhee (6), Curetan (0), Jones (0), Wilkerson (0), Gaither (IR), Brox (5), Wheeler (7), Mahmoud (0), Miles (0), Hamadouche (0), Joiner (0)
