Game Date
Feb 11, 2016
Score
HAWKS: 41
YORKTOWN HS: 66

Hawks Buried By Patriots 66-41

Hayfield is in a three game in three night stretch, to finish the regular season, and so far it has not been kind to the Hawks, who fell to Yorktown tonight, by 25 points. The Hawks again played a solid defensive effort in the first 16 minutes, only to get overwhelmed by their opponent’s adjustments in the second half. Yorktown, after only scoring 22 points in the first half, exploded for 23 in the pivotal third quarter, besting Hayfield by 10, to pull away. Hayfield’s inability to keep their man in front of them contributed to disproportionate score.  The Hawks have struggled of late, only scoring 131 points over the past three games (43.7 pts per game), which has led to this current three game losing streak. Hopefully Hayfield will bust out of their slump tomorrow on Senior night, and at least for one night, savor a sweet victory.

This game did feature a first, late in the contest, when Sr. PF Will Miles (3pts) swished his first three pointer of his varsity career. His bright spot was one few on this night, as Hayfield allowed an opponent to score 66 or more points for the 11th time this season. Hayfield was paced by So. Brian Cobbs (14pts, 3rebs, 3asts, 2stls, 5 blcks), who registered his first multi-block game of his varsity career, and scored all 8 of Hayfield’s second quarter points. Sr. SG Romaine Oakley (6pts, 2rebs, 2asts) found the bottom of the net from downtown twice tonight, raising his team high of made 3pt FG’s to 28.  Sr. SF Aaron Jeter (4pts, 3rebs, 1blck) had a second straight un-Aaron like game, but may be wearing down, after playing so consistently for the better part of the last three months. His 8 rebounds over the past two games, pushed his team lead in rebounds to 141 (6.7/game). Jr. PG Will Douglas (3pts, 1stl) received a rare start tonight, and responded with a solid game, including swiping his 20th steal of the season, becoming the third Hawk to have 20 or more steals this season.

Hayfield returns to action Tuesday (2/16/16) night (Senior Night), to finish out the regular season, looking for its 8 win of the season (6th in conference).
