JV Hawks Soar Past Westfields

On Friday, December 11, 2009, the Hayfield JV Hawks (boys) traveled to Westfields HS, near Chantilley, Va. There they encountered a very disciplined team, but through determination and high intensity, the Hawks were able to stay undefeated in this young season. For the second straight game, the Hawks relied on strong defensive pressure and accurate long range shooting during the pivotal third quarter.

The begining of the game started similar to the game vs. TC Williams. Brandyn Marshall started quickly again, scoring the first 4 points. Westfields countered with 4 points of their own. Both teams took a while to feel each other out, with Hayfield taking the first quarter, 7-6. Hayfield kept Westfields in the game, by sending them to the free throw line constantly, during the 2nd quarter.

After a pep talk from Coach Poindexter, the JV Hawks rebounded by scoring 20 points in the third quarter. They were led by Sophomore forward, Nate McShay, who followed up his fine first game performance, with a better one, scoring a Hawks high; 15 points, and grabbing 8 rebounds.  In his first game of the season, center Kelechi Adoma came off the bench to score 7 points, blocked 2 shots, along with 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. His high energy down the stretch helped spur the Hawks to victory. Equally important were the free throw shooting of Tyler Seelman, and Ben Kim, who both hit critical free throws in the 4th quarter. In the end it was too much for Westfields, as they fell to the Hawks 54-45.

Other notable performances: Sam Angeli continued his hot outside shooting, hitting 2-3 beyond the arc, including one shot with defenders draped all over him. Anthony Wilson continued his excellent defensive play with 3 key blocks, and 5 rebounds. Barry Coleman had his second turnover free game, while recording 2 steals, and scoring on a lay-up. Steve Lynch, still recovering from an ankle strain helped stabilize the offense in the third quarter, and grabbed a pivotal rebound, halting Westfields comback.

Please come out and squawk for your JV Hawks, on Tuesday 12/15 vs. Chantilley at Hayfield, and travel to Edison, in a crosstown match-up, on Friday 12/18
