JV Hawks Get Wings Clipped
On Tuesday night, the JV boys were beaten (62-51) by the JV from Chantilly HS. Hayfield never really got going, scoring only 13 points in the first half. Trailing by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter, the Hawks finally got their defense in gear, closing to 11 points by the games' end. Chantilly, although not the most athletic, was the most patient. Chantilly routinely found the open man, often passing 3 or more times within each offensive set. Their defense was equally impressive, holding the Hawks to 16 made field goals on 47 shots. The only bright light was Hayfields' free throw shooting, which was over 60% for the first time this year.
The Hawks did have some impressive individual performances. Nate McShay continued to play well, scoring 12 points and hauling in 13 rebounds. Tyler Seelman broke into double figures (12 pts) for the first time, hitting two 3pt field goals, and hitting 6-7 from the stripe. Junior PG, Brandyn Marshall continued to play with confidence, adding 13 points, many of them hotly contested in the key. Swingman Ben Kim struggled after hitting a 3 pointer to start the game, finishing with 5 points. Center Garrick Short scored his first basket of the year, and added 5 offensive rebounds.
The Hawks begin their National District season this Friday (12/18/09), traveling to nearby Edison HS, to compete with their crosstown rivals. Please come out and Squawk for your Hawks!!
