Hayfield JV Hawks outlast Washington & Lee, 69-65 in OT

The JV Hawks won their 8th straight game, but needed overtime to get it. The Hawks played a well balanced team from W&L, as the Generals have proved to be Hayfields best competition of the season, losing both games by a total of 5 points. In this game, Hayfield led or was tied for most of the game, but never leading by more than a few points. In the waning seconds of the game, the Hawks fell behind by as many as three, until swingman Nate McShay hit arguably the most important shot of the season, a three pointer from the left wing, to knot the score at 60. During the extra session, Hayfield was able to prevail by 4 to stay undefeated in the new decade.

The Hawks were paced by McShay (16 pts, 8 rebs, 4 assts), and sophomore guard Ben Kim, who followed up his 25 point effort at Falls Church, by scoring a team high 18 points, and dishing out 5 assists. Junior guard Brandyn Marshall also tallied 5 assists, along with his 7 points. All in all, the Hawks had 23 assists, 12 steals, and 6 blocks, to balance out their 22 turnovers.

Other notable efforts: Freshman center Garrick Short had his best game of the season, with 14 points and 2 blocks. Anthony Wilson continued his solid play with 4 points and 7 rebounds. Sam Angeli hit another 3 pointer, while Steve Lynch went perfect from the charity stripe, 2-2. Barry Coleman added 2 steals to pad his team lead. Nana Owusu gave our starters some valuable breathers, while dropping in a jump shot, and snatching a steal, and assisting another score.
