JV HAWKS REMAIN UNDEFEATED, EDGE JV EAGLES BY 4

The JV Hawks of Hayfield Secondary visited Edison HS yesterday, for their first match up of the season. The JV Hawks took an early lead, but Edison was able to stay within striking distance during the first quarter. Missed layups combined with foul trouble, spelled blown opportunities, which led to that small lead. The 2nd quarter saw a series of tough calls from the referee’s, which coupled with poor free throw shooting by the Hawks led to a much closer game than it should have been. Then the foul trouble caught up with Hawks, and they saw their lead vanish, leaving them in a 7 point deficit at the half.

In the third quarter, the JV Hawks surged back to the lead, with Jeremy Jones(15pts) connecting on 3 baskets, and adding 3 FT’s for 9 points during that run. By the end of the quarter however, the Hawks trailed again by 4 points. The Hawks, who have not experienced this type of game this season, were able to survive circumspect calls against their leading scorer (Tyler Hodge), and leading rebounder (Mike Cobbs), which saw them on the bench at the beginning of the 4^th.

As the 4th quarter opened, the JV Hawks kept their composure, and settled in for the closing battle with the Eagles. Tyler Hodge returned to the court, and joined Ralph, to lead the team to victory, along with complimentary efforts from Kyle, Corey, Eddy, Jeremy, Mike and Jordan. Although the JV Hawks shot a poor free throw percentage and the Hawks coaching staff remained embattled with the referees throughout, the game ended with a favorable result for the young Hawks who continued their undefeated season despite their first true test of the season against an extremely well coached Edison team.
