Game Date

Score
HAWKS: 50
WAKEFIELD HIGH: 40

The JV Hawks continued their undefeated opening to the 2011-2012 basketball season with a hard fought win vs. the Warriors of Wakefield HS. A game that seemed all but sealed, with Hayfield leading 27-7 with a little over 1 minute to play in the first half, turned into a nail biter, as the Warriors mounted a furious comeback, going on a 9-0 run to end the half, and closing to within 5 points at the end of the third quarter. The Hawks prevailed, by playing excellent press defense, and by hitting timely shots down the stretch, winning by 10 at the end.

Overall the Hawks struggled with all aspects of their offensive game, shooting just 28.5% from the field, and 52% from the line. However their defense once again provided a cushion (13 steals, 2 blocks, and 31 defensive rebounds)

The Hawks were led once again by Faris Gebril (10 pts. 9 rebounds, 4 assts, & 2 stls), who tallied double figures again for the second straight game. Captains Dalon Thomas (4 pts, 11 rebounds [7 offensive], 2 assts), and Phil Guydon (6 pts, 2 stls, 2 assts) pitched in to help the Hawks build a 20 pt 1st half lead. In the crucial 4th quarter, 3 players stood out to help seal the win: Junior Darius Poindexter (6 pts, 3 rebs, scored 3 critical baskets, and played excellent defense, his backcourt mate (and brother) Daquan Poindexter broke down the Warriors defense, with his constant up tempo dribbling skills, and sophomore Daniel Carter hit a key three pointer in the closing minutes to stretch the lead back to 10 points.

The JV Hawks return home this Monday, January 9th at 7:30 vs. Edison HS
