Game Date
Jan 17, 2012
Score
HAWKS: 58
YORKTOWN HIGH: 56

JV HAWKS WIN IN THRILLING STYLE!!

The JV Hawks ended their 2 game skid, with a riveting 2 point victory over the previously unbeaten JV Patriots of Yorktown HS. The Hawks played excellent defense during the last 2 minutes of regulation, to erase a 4 point deficit, and continued that defense in overtime, allowing only 2 field goals in 8 total minutes of overtime. The Hawks withstood a last second shot in the second overtime, to outlast Yorktown.

The Hawks were led by their starting backcourt, captain Phil Guydon (10 pts, 3 assts, 2 stls) and Faris Gebril (11 pts, 4 assts, 2 stls). These backcourt mates scored in double figures together for the first time this season. Overall the starting five scored 42 of the 58 points. They were assisted by Daniel Carter (6 pts) including a clutch lay-up and free throw down the stretch. The Hawks even withstood their own mistakes to take home the win, including 6 missed free throws in OT.

Other notable contributions were: Kevin White (1 block, 2 rebs) relieved Kharon Brewer (6 pts, 5 rebs) quite well, when Kharon picked up 2 quick fouls. Kyle Phox (1 stl, 1 asst, 1 reb) and Daquan Poindexter (2 pts, 1 asst, 1 stl) played stifling defense both during the 4th quarter and in OT, to give the starters valuable rest.Junior Quentin Hutchinson (9 pts, 7 rebs) and freshman Nicholas Grant (4 pts, 2 rebs) helped spring our effective trap defense, by smothering the inbounds pass on numerous occasions.

The JV Hawks finally (phew) return to the Hawks Nest for the next 6 of 7 games. The next opponent is a rematch with the Raiders from Stuart HS on Friday, 1/20/12
