JV Battle of the Birds; Eagles Bring Down Hawks 71-63

The JV Boys returned to the hard court, Friday night, vs. cross town rival birds of a feather, the JV Eagles of Edison HS. The game had the largest crowd you will ever see for a JV game, but of course, it is Hayfield vs. Edison, and there is no love lost between these two squads. The JV Hawks, although playing well in spurts, never got it going against the JV Eagles. The Eagles had the upper hand in most categories, including tripling the amount of chances at the FT line (33 attempts to Hayfield’s 11 attempts). After trailing by 9 in the 1st quarter, the JV Hawks came out soaring in the 2nd, however they could only match basket for basket, as the Eagles equaled the Hawks point total for the quarter (24-24). The second half was more of the same, although Hawks outscored the Eagles by 1, they were only able to reduce the deficit by one point.

The JV Hawks were paced by SF Romaine Oakley (10pts, 3asts, 2blks) and PF Jeremt Jones (10pts, 11rebs, 2blks, 2stls). Jones had two pretty ally-oop layins off of inbounds passes, while Oakley buried 2 three for the second game in a row. Other key contributors included: PF Will Miles (7pts, 5rebs, 2asts), who masterfully boxed out his opponents, leading to many Hawk rebounds. PG Xavier Gingras (9pts, 3asts, 2stls) displayed grittiness throughout the game, as he routinely broke down his opponent, and drove the lane, only to be hammered, while few fouls were called in his favor. At one point he went down with an elbow injury, but returned to action within 8 game minutes, to aid the JV Hawks in their comeback bid. Both PF Mohamed Mahmoud (8pts, 9rebs, 2blks) who received a surprise start, and SG Eli Villacorte (8pts, 2stls, 1blk) contributed at both ends of the floor. Reserve SG Terrell Wheeler (4pts, 1stl), came in to provide stellar on the ball defense, flustering the opposing ball handlers with his up in your face defense, so desperately needed by JV Hawks last night.
