Hunch Pays Off, JV Hawks Win |
Hayfield’s Boys JV Basketball team returned to the win column, for the first time since December, with a 5 point victory over their Northern Region hosts, the JV Wildcats of Centerville HS. The JV Hawks used a revamped starting line-up, comprised of 5 reserves. These 5 young men responded with high quality, high energy, and efficient basketball, as the JV Hawks sprinted out to an 8 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
The Wildcats were not going to be easy prey however, as they exploded for 25 points (and held the Hawks to 11 points on 4-17 shooting) in the 2nd quarter, to take 6 point half time lead. The Hawks 1st quarter starters opened the 3rd, and held the Wildcats to 12 points, allowing the Hawks to slowly claw their way back. In the 4th, the JV Hawks defense stepped up, and limited Centerville to 3 field goals, while the JV Hawks went to the line 11 times, and outscored their opponents by 10 overall.
The JV Hawks were led by PF Aaron Jeter (20pts, 12rebs, 5stls), who returned to his freshman year form (where he averaged a double double). Jeter was relentless at both ends of the floor, either on the glass, or when picking off wayward passes. He was joined in double figures by surprise starter PG Juwan Williams (11pts, 3rebs, 2assts), who responded with his best overall game of his Hayfield career. SF Romaine Oakley (12pts, 4rebs, 3stls) came off the bench, and provided essential scoring, especially in the pivotal 4th quarter, when he chipped in with 7 points. The JV Hawks return to the hardcourt tomorrow, when they host the JV Warriors of Wakefield HS.
