JV Hawks Strike Quickly But Fade at End, Fall to 3-6

The JV boys of Hayfield Secondary struck quickly against Madison, with nearly a full week off due to weather, but were unable to keep up the defensive intensity needed to defeat their undefeated opponent, the JV Warhawks of Madison HS. The time off was apparently beneficial for the Hawks, as they were fresh, and focused to start this game. The Hawks limited the Warhawks, who were visibly caught off guard, to 3 field goals in the first quarter. The Warhawks found their gear in the second, opening up a 12 point lead at the half.

The Hawks bounced back with a strong 3rd quarter, as C Corey McGhee (11pts, 12rebs, 3blks, 2stls) began to dominate at both ends of the floor. SF Romaine Oakley (15pts, 3asts, 2stls) joined him, as they consisted of a two man wrecking crew, scoring a combined 16 of the Hawks 21 points in the 3rd quarter. SG Elijah Villacorte (5pts, 2asts, 2stls) was the only other player to score in that quarter, and was pivotal in the Hawks 3rd quarter defensive strategy. Unfortunately the amount of exhausting effort, combined with the lack of practice time this week, led to a 4th quarter drop off in intensity, allowing the JV Warhawks to remain undefeated.

Other key contributors: PF Aaron Jeter (8pts, 10rebs, 1blk) combined with McGhee to snag a total of 22 of the JV Hawks 34 rebounds. SG Terrell Wheeler (2pts, 1reb, 1stl) played sterling defense, and almost converted an acrobatic lay-up, where he was forced to take off from just above the charity stripe. It was shades of Jordan, without the flourishing finish. SG Jecardi Sykes connected for a 3 pointer for the 4th time in 6 games, while PG Xavier Gingras (4pts, 2dflcts) came off the bench to run the Hawks attack, and was the only JV Hawk to be perfect (2-2) at the line.
