Boys JV Basketball vs. MCLEAN HS

Jan 27, 2014
Score
HAWKS: 55
MCLEAN HS: 69

Defense Early, Free Throws Late Not Enough To Lift Hawks

A day and a half after disposing of the JV Raiders of Stuart HS, the Hawks ran into a wall of Highlanders of McLean HS. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the day belonged to McLean starting point guard, who had a game high 26 points. The Hawks didn’t help themselves, sending him to the charity stripe 16 times (he made 14). That said, the Hawks did not have an ounce of quit in them. As they have begun to show, this team has some grit, and will keep soaring to achieve their goals.

The Hawks battled, despite some poor choices by them on defense, and some interesting calls, throughout the contest. Unfortunately once the Highlanders took the lead, they were not giving it up. In the end, this game would see a total of 75 shots (43 for McLean, 32 for Hayfield) from the free throw line. In fact the Hawks did not actually make a field goal in the fourth, and yet kept the Highlanders within sight by scoring 14 points at the line. The principle contributor was PF Aaron Jeter (12pts, 5rebs, 7stls) who made 7-10 in the final frame.

Other key contributors: SG Elijah Villacorte (8pts, 1reb, 1stl) broke out of his mini-slump, burying 2 threes, and matching his season high. C Jeremy Jones (9pts, 5rebs, 1blk) returned to action, and showed his versatility by taking the Highlanders centers off the dribble for 7 points in the 3rd quarter. C Corey McGhee (5pts, 8rebs, 4stls, 1blk) continued to shine on the glass at both ends of the floor. PG Xavier Gingras (4pts, 2rebs, 6stls) repeatedly helped the Hawks make stops with his quick hands and feet. In fact the Hawks had a season high 21 steals in this game, combined with 13 deflections, and 3 blocks. This show of defense should have been the difference, but the Highlanders scored 1/3 of their points (32 of 69) from the line.

The Hawks return to the hardwood on Thursday, when they leave the “nest” for a game at Langley HS.
