Hayfield JV Hawks Soar in Home Opener!

The JV Hawks stormed out to an impressive 18 point win at home over South Lakes HS tonight. The Hawks never trailed, building a 35 point lead midway through the 3rd quarter. The Hawks were led by sophomore guard Oliver Guydon, who shot 9 for 14 overall, finishing with a game high 22 points. Guydon benefitted from excellent passing all night, as the Hawks dished out 18 assists, led by Elbert Maxwell and Jeff Erskine, with 3 a piece.

South Lakes refused to give up, trimming the 35 point lead to 18 by the end of the game, outscoring the Hawks by 17 points in the 4th quarter. In the end though, the lead was too great, with Hayfield's defensive too intense earlier in the game. Elbert Maxwell scored on 3 quick baskets, 2 off steals to start the game, en route to 8 points, and the game was rolling. When the 1st quarter ended, Hayfield had held South Lakes to 2 points.

The second and third quarters were dominated by Hayfield, outscoring South Lakes 46-22. In this game, starters and reserves were equally effective. AJ Flaviano and Bryan DiRosario came off the bench to spark the defense, which ended up with 29 forced turnovers (including 18 steals). They both helped on the offensive end as well, scoring 7 and 5 points respectively.

Two true freshman saw their first regular season action tonight, for Hayfield. Grant Williams chipped in with 5 rebounds and a steal, while Terry Yarbrough buried his first basket of his HS career, and just missing his second on a 180 degree reverse lay-up. The JV are also blessed to have 3 juniors on this squad, to give the under-classmen needed experience. Brandon Anderson played excellent defense on the South Lakes point guards, including the forcing of a 5 second call on one unlucky opponent. Davonte Johnson added two key baskets (4 points), as Hayfield built its 3rd quarter lead, and Kenny Brown lent his strength, grabbing 4 rebounds, and dishing out 2 assists.

The Hawks only trip to the charity stripe was also a success. Josh Eldridge shot 2 for 2, and added a field goal, to finish with 4 points. Hayfield is very deep at point guard, which hopefully will spell bad news for their opponents. Not only will other teams have to deal with Jeff Erskine, at 6 feet tall, but they will have to contend with Xavier Jones who is a lightning quick ball "hawk". He is also adept on the offensive end, shooting 3 for 5 tonight (6 points). Another equally talented guard is Brandyn Marshall, who also had a great night shooting, hitting 3 of his 4 shots, adding 7 points Inside Hayfield has two "bigs", Jason Stewart and Richard Laryea. Both saw meaningful time, with Richard dropping in a two pointer, and grabbing 2 rebounds, while Jason operated the high post position quite well, with several excellent passes, including his first assist of his career.

Hayfield JV next will oppose Mt. Vernon on Friday, 12/12/08 (away).
