Bruins nip Hawks by one!

Last night, the JV Hayfield Hawks boys allowed a seemingly won game to slip through their fingers. The JV Bruins of Lake Braddock, thought to be beaten, after a excellent third quarter defensive effort by the Hawks, found a way to come back in the fourth quarter. The Hawks had several chances down the stretch to put the game away, but unfortunately it was not meant to be.

The game was played well by both teams during the first half, which proved to be a defensive affair. The JV Hawks, trailing by 3 points at the half (22-19), came out fired up defenisively in the third quarter. Employing a half-court trap, the Hawks held the Bruins without any points for the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter, exchanging a 3 point deficit into a 5 point lead. The lead grew to as many as 11 points, while finishing at 8 (35-27) by the end of the third quarter.

The loss dampened the return of the Hawks starting center, Jawaan Mosby, who saw his first action this season. Mosby scored 4 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Grant Williams had his best game rebounding, snatching 9, including 5 offensive boards. Elbert Maxwell led the Hawks in scoring (10 pts.), tallying several key baskets in the third quarter. Jeff Erskine added 6 points from beyond the arc, while Oliver Guydon and AJ Flaviano each added 5 points a piece. Davonte Johnson chipped in with 4 points, as did Josh Eldridge, while Brandon Anderson and Bryan DiRosario added significant help on defense. The Hawks, usually very efficient from 3 point range, only connected on 4 of 14 this night, with several taken at ill advised times.

The Hawks will look to rebound, and get back to .500, when they travel the short distance to Lee HS on Friday, January 9, 2009. Please show up and Sqawk for your Hawks!!
