YOUNG HAWKS OVERWHELM RAIDERS, WIN 3RD STRAIGHT
Hayfield’s Boys Freshmen basketball team, struggled to find their rhythm yesterday, but their superior talent was still too much for the 9th grade team from Stuart HS. The Fresh Hawks jumped out to an early lead, only to let the Raiders back into the game late in the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, it was the Hawks bench who came to play, and built an 8 point lead. Malcolm Day (6pts, 5stls) and Austin Lyons (4stls) led the way on defense, helping to force the Raiders into many of their 30 turnovers. On a afternoon where many of the Hawks could not get into the groove, it was PG Xavier Gingras (12pts, 4rebs, 4stls, 2assts) who took over, scoring in double figures for the first time this year, including 3-4 from the FT line. Other key contributors included Mohamed Mahmoud (2pts, 4rebs, 3deflections, 1stl), who also came off the bench to impact the game, providing tough interior defense, and hit 2 key free throws. In the second half, when the Hawks really began to open up the game, PF Aaron Jeter (6pts, 9rebs,3stls,2blks) began to come alive on the backboards, snatching a team high 9, including 5 on the offensive glass.
