HAWKS PRESS SWIPES WIN FROM JAGUARS
The Fresh Hawks of Hayfield Secondary avoided their third loss of season by employing a full court press in the last minutes of the 4th quarter, and unleashing their downtown threat; Romaine Oakely. Oakley (14pts, 7rebs, 1stl), hit two three pointers, added another 2 point field goal, and one free throw to lead the Hawks back from the brink of defeat to win by 2 over the Jaguars of Falls Church HS. The Hawks had begun the game well, but stalled in the 2nd quarter, when the smaller but fundamentally sound Jaguars outscored them by 12, to take the lead at halftime. In the 3rd quarter the Hawks were unable to claw their way back, as the Jags matched them basket for basket. It was only late in the 4th quarter where FCHS seemed to crack, forced by the Hawks smothering press defense. PG Xavier Gingras (3pts, 5asts, 3stls) seemed to be everywhere, snatching away 2 steals in the quarter, spurring the Hawks defense. His backcourt mate Elijah Villacorte (8pts, 1ast, 1stl) hit a key baseline layup to help the Hawks comeback.
Other key contributors included: Will Miles (2pts, 7rebs, 1stl), who had a career high in rebounds, and raised the Hawks intensity level, as he has all season. F/C Zach Wenger (5pts, 2blks) had another solid performance, including a pair of rejections in the paint. PF Pierce Pratt (4pts, 3rebs, 1stl), the newest Hawk, playing in only his third game, continued to gain momentum, including finding the range on two clutch jumpers.
