YOUNG HAWKS STOPPED COLD BY PATRIOTS
The Freshmen Boys Basketball team from Hayfield Secondary were beaten soundly by the Patriots from district rival; Yorktown HS. At first it seemed that the Hawks would be equal to the challenge, as SG Elijah Villacorte (14pts, 2rebs, 2stls) got off to a hot start. Eli hit his first 4 shots, including 2 from long range, as the Hawks were able to stay within striking distance in both the 1st and 2nd quarters. The Patriots could not seem to get their vaunted offense running smoothly, and the Hawks took advantage. That said, the Hawks trailed by 4 at the half, and would never get closer than that.
The Patriots shooters got untracked in the second half, out scoring the Hawks by 7 in the third, and then by 11 in the decisive 4th. The Hawks missed a total of 24 shots in the key, and ended up 17-61 (27.8%) from the field (3-11 from three point range), and 8-20 (40%) from the line. Hayfield also received little help from their bench, with only 4 baskets total from their reserves.
There were a few bright spots on the afternoon however. Reserve PF Corey McGhee tallied 3 points, 5 rebs (4 offensive), 1 steal, and 1 block in fewer than 5 minutes of play. That is the type of impact that Hayfield’s bench needs to provide, in order for the Fresh Hawks to rise above their competition. The starting front court of Romaine Oakley (9pts, 8rebs, 3stls, 2blks), Pierce Pratt (7pts, 4rebs, 2blks), and Aaron Jeter (4pts, 7rebs) grabbed a combined 9 offensive rebounds, and blocked 4 shots. Hayfield as a whole rejected 7 Patriot shots. The Hawks look to bounce back this coming Thursday, when they journey to Jeb Stuart HS.
