Boys Freshman Basketball vs. MOUNT VERNON HS

HAWKS CAN’T FIGURE OUT MAJORS, LOSE 58-37

The Freshmen Hawks of Hayfield Secondary, were defeated by the Mt. Vernon Majors for the second time this season, in eerily similar fashion to the first game. This time the Hawks gave up 58 points, while giving up 54 the first time around. In both games, the Hawks could only manage 37 points. This time around though, the Hawks were in it at halftime, down only 1 point. Unfortunately the Hawks could not sustain any semblance of defense, giving up 19 offensive rebounds (actually, a marked improvement from game one), and allowing constant penetration from the Majors point guard (who wound up with 24 points). In the first game, Elijah Villacorte had a monster 4th quarter to fuel the Hawks, however in this game, not one Hawk reached double figures.

There were some bright spots however. C Corey McGhee (4pts, 6rebs, 2blks) received his second consecutive start, and grabbed a half dozen rebounds, while swatting away two would be baskets. F Ahlyzia Joannides (4pts, 3rebs, 3asts) saw significant time in this game, and was active on the defensive glass, and delivered 3 assists. PF Zach Wenger (6pts, 2rebs, 1blk) matched his season high for points, including swishing a beautiful left baseline 16 footer.

The Hawks return to action on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to W&L HS.
