Game Date
Dec 4, 2015
Score
HAWKS: 60
THOMAS EDISON HS: 34

Freshmen Hawks Win the Bird Bowl: 60-34

The excitement and the novelty of participating in their first high school basketball game against Edison HS, the school’s cross town rivalry, in front of their parents, friends and family members began with uncertainty and raw nerves. Along the way, the young Hawks were able to manage their eagerness by competing during the first quarter and incrementally continued to develop their individual as well as the team’s skills and chemistry.

As the second quarter began, the coaching staff explored ways to increase the intensity of the game by implementing a more aggressive man to man defense. Dividends immediately paid off as the young Hawks scored 11 unanswered points before Edison scored their first basket. This adjustment changed the momentum to favor the young Hawks as Edison was limited to 7 points in the quarter and as Hayfield took a 27- 20 lead at half time.

The intensity continued in the third quarter as the young Hawks accumulated more success with their full court pressure and man to man defense. It disturbed Edison’s half-court offense as they were was once again limited to 7points in the quarter. On the opposite side of the court, Hayfield added 16 more points to lead 43-27.

As Hayfield’s lead continued to widen, the fourth quarter was an exercise to optimize the player’s and team’s experience. The coaching staff alternated with different combinations to continue to identify the teams’ strengths and challenges. By the time the game ended the young Hawks hard work on and off the court certainly showed themselves, their parents, friends, family members, and the school the future of Hayfield Basketball is in the making.
