Poor Free Throw Shooting Leads to Tough Loss for Hawks

Although the freshmen team came eager to play and had exceptional efforts late in the game they fell short in several categories to lose to Langley High School 53-47. Throughout the game they were plague with poor free throw shooting 14.3% (3-21) and inappropriate shot selections that contributed to the outcome of the game.

During the first quarter, the Hawks played aggressive defense and controlled the momentum of the game. They rebounded well (5 rebounds) and executed their offense to stay competitive. However their subpar shooting form the free throw line (16.7% – 1 for 6) and compilations of key mistakes gave Langley opportunities to close the first quarter with a 11-9 lead.

The second quarter presented many opportunities for the young Hawks. They controlled the boards again as they were able rebound 14 times (9 in offense and 5 in defense); had 4 steals and 12 defensive defections. However they were not able to convert them into points. They missed easy layups or second chance opportunities. They shot 4-14 from the field and continued their poor free throw shooting percentage (0% - 0 for 3). On the opposite side of the court, Langley scored 9 unanswered points to increase their lead 21-13. With a few adjustments, the Hawks were able to cut the lead 25 to 19 to end the second quarter.

When the third quarter progressed, the young Hawks were able convert a handful of turnovers into points to cut the lead 29 to 25 and eventually end the quarter with a lead of 33-35 as they played their best quarter of the game. They shot 42.9 % (6 for 14) from 50 % (1-2) from the 3 point line and were 25% (1-4) from the free throw line.

Regardless of valiant effort in the third quarter, their poor free throw shooting and their untimely field goal selections in the fourth quarter diminished their hard work. They shot 12.8% (1-8) from the free throw line and only converted 11.1% (1 out of 9 shots) from the 3 point line. Langley on the other hand converted majority of their free throw attempts and scored on Hawk’s mistakes. Nevertheless, the game was within reach for the young Hawks to win. Yes, it was a tough lost but it will be used as an experience and inspiration to help develop the young Hawks’ awareness of playing a complete game.
