Key Mistakes Caused Loss to Warhawks

Although the young Hawks played well majority of the game, key mistakes with approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds left to play gave Madison the opportunity to win the game 55-52.

During the first quarter, the young Hawks could not find their rhythm and shot poorly from the field (20% Field Goal, 14.3% from the 3 point area, and 0 percent from the Free Throw line). However they managed to stay close with their aggressive defense and only trailed 7 to 10 after the first quarter.

The second quarter started out like a chess match. Both teams attempted multiple offensive and defensive schemes to develop an advantage. With their aggressive and physical play, the young Hawks were able to generate four (4) turnovers and eleven (11) steals. However, they were not able to convert many of the opportunities into points as they missed six (6) layups. But along the way, they kept working hard and eventually took the lead 23 to 20 to end the half.

In the third quarter, the young Hawks opened with a full court trap to utilize their quickness and speed. The switch caused deflections, steals and transition opportunities.  With just over 2 minutes into the quarter, the young Hawks added to their lead 28-20. By 4 minutes into the game, the lead continued to favor the Hawks 32-24. However aggressive plays by Madison paired with careless mistakes by the young Hawks allowed Madison to trim the lead 33-30 to end the quarter.

The fourth quarter consisted of peaks and valleys for the young Hawks, within minutes into the fourth quarter, the Hawks extended their lead 41-33, however their inability to control the ball and manage the clock gave Madison opportunities to the stay within striking distance. With a six point lead at the 6:38 mark and the Hawks turned over the ball three consecutive times. Madison took advantage of these mistakes and converted them into points. Eventually, key free throws sealed the game for Madison 55-52. The opportunity certainly were learning and teaching experience for the young Hawks. It gave them the following perspectives about the game: never underestimate the other team’s desires and abilities; play your game until the clock runs out; follow instructions; learn to manage your possession and your time well.
